Leo Santa Cruz vs Miguel Flores Odds & Picks. Leo Santa Cruz vs Miguel Flores Odds & Picks. By Dylan Bowker in Boxing. Leo Santa Cruz is a three-weight world champion and is looking to become a titlist in a fourth division. Despite this, there is some rhetoric among boxing fans and pundits that Santa Cruz isn’t. LAS VEGAS — In the co-main event, Leo 'El Terremoto' Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19 KOs) became a four-division world champion by capturing the WBA Super Featherweight with a unanimous decision over Miguel Flores (24-3, 12 KOs). 'Winning this title means the world to me,' said Santa Cruz. 'This is all for the fans who support me. Leo Santa Cruz won a world title in a fourth division, at super featherweight, via unanimous decision when he outworked Miguel Flores for a vacant version of the WBA junior lightweight title.

Oscar Valdez was good, maybe even great but few, if any, believed he would be able to get the job done against Miguel Berchelt. The two fought in the main event slot at “The Bubble” in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada just a few weeks ago.

On the line was Berchelt’s WBC super featherweight world title. For the most part, Valdez was viewed as a worthy challenger but one who simply didn’t have the firepower to compete with the hard hitting Berchelt.

However, after outboxing, hurting and later finishing off his man in the tenth, most were left shell shocked. Well, everyone except for Leo Santa Cruz.

“I always said Valdez had a chance, not like other people,” said Santa Cruz during an interview with Fight Hype. “I knew he had a chance to win, even by knockout.”

Leo Santa Cruz Vs Miguel Flores Odds For Today

During the lead-up to Valdez vs Berchelt, there was one prevailing thought surrounding the event. That was, everyone should flip on their television sets to watch this one as it was going to be a back and forth war. But while their showdown wasn’t a boring one by any stretch, it certainly wasn’t the violent contest many were expecting.

For Santa Cruz though, he appreciated the approach that Valdez took in order to pick up the victory.

“He didn’t stay there and trade punches with him. He was just boxing him and landing the bigger shots.”

Although Valdez is still enjoying his newly won world title, several notable names in the division are now eyeing a showdown with him. Amongst them is Santa Cruz.

Despite his credentials as multiple division world champion, many will point to his sixth-round knockout loss at the hands of Gervonta Davis in October of 2020 as the main reason why he doesn’t deserve an immediate title shot.

With that said, Santa Cruz believes his recent setback is of little importance. If given the chance, the California native knows that his all-Mexican showdown against Valdez would be a classic.

“I’m up for a fight between me and him. I know people are going to say I’m coming off a loss and they knocked me out but it doesn’t matter. That’s what we’re here for. Were here to fight. I know a fight between me and Valdez would be really great and entertaining for the fans. Styles make fights and I know me and him have the perfect style to make a great fight.”

The ease in which Valdez handled Berchelt just a few weeks ago still resonates with Santa Cruz. Like most, he was expecting a much more competitive fight. Still, with all due respect to Berchelt, Santa Cruz is under the belief that he didn’t have the tools needed to get the job done. With himself, on the other hand, he believes at the very least, the entertainment value will be through the roof.

“I know Berchelt is a great fighter and everything but Oscar Valdez made it look easy. With me, I think I would make it more entertaining.”

Here are the betting odds from online sportsbook BetOnline.ag (full review here).

  • Miguel Flores +1250
  • Leo Santa Cruz -20000

My Pick

The 31-year-old Santa Cruz, who fights out of the Los Angeles area, has an impressive record of 36-1-1 along with 19 Kos. He’s also won world bantamweight and junior featherweight titles since turning pro but decided to move up in weight and captured the vacant WBA Super World Featherweight Belt when he beat Abner Mares by majority decision in 2015. Santa Cruz stands just over 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 69-inch reach. He has a 50 per cent knockout ratio and has fought 249 rounds since turning pro in 2006.

His biggest wins have been against Mares (twice), Carl Frampton, Kiko Martinez, Cristian Mijares, Victor Terrazas and Eric Morel. Santa Cruz’s lone draw was a four-rounder against Rodrigo Hernandez in 2007 and his lone defeat came at the hands of Frampton via a majority decision in their first meeting in 2016. Santa Cruz then regained his crown via a majority decision over Frampton six months later. The champion is quite an exciting boxer as he tends to throw punches in bunches and isn’t averse to going toe-to-toe with his opponents.

Santa Cruz also owns a pretty solid chin to go along with his boxing skills and he’s won most of his fights due to his relentless punching output. He likes to work inside and trade shots even when he has the advantage in height and reach. He’s just half an inch shorter than Flores with the same reach. Many fans would like to see Santa Cruz meet Frampton in a rubber match or some other elite boxers in his weight division down the road if he gets past Flores.

The 27-year-old Flores, who fights out of Texas, was supposed to meet Santa Cruz in February but had to pull out due to an ankle injury. He enters the contest with a mark of 24-2 with 12 Kos and was stopped in both of his losses. He was halted in the sixth round by Dat Nguyen in February, 2017 and stopped due to cuts in his next bout five months later against Chris Avalos. Flores had Avalos down third round but couldn’t finish him off.

Flores made his pro debut in 2009 and has boxed 124 rounds since. He stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 69-inch reach and has just average power with a current knockout ratio of 46.2 per cent. His biggest wins have been against Jose Luis Araiza, Carlos Padilla, Alfred Tetteh, Ruben Tamayo and Ryan Kielczweski. He’s taking a big step up in class against Santa Cruz and will need to match the champion’s punch output to have any chance of pulling off and upset.

Prediction…

Santa Cruz is used to dictating the pace and overwhelming his opponents with punches and that’s what he’ll try against Flores. This could turn into an exciting fight if Flores can keep up with him and hits back but when it’s all said and done I’m expecting Santa Cruz to retain his title.

The fight should be closer than the odds suggest, but look for a Santa Cruz win.
